Leafs Update Central – June 28, 2010
The 2010 NHL Entry draft has passed with little movement and only ripples in the pond compared to previous years’ splashes.
Brian Burke and the Toronto Maple Leafs made a few minor moves, trading unsigned prospect Jimmy Hayes for a 2nd round pick in this years draft to select Brad Ross at the #43 slot, trading a 5th round pick to Anaheim for Mike Brown, and a couple of minor deals swapping picks for picks.
All-in-all, a quiet but productive weekend for the Blue and White.
This week promises to be a little more exciting with July 1st, Double-B’s self-proclaimed draft, fast approaching. I’ll be using this space here to track all the top-free agents. I’m using the top-100 UFAs list courtesy of James Mirtle. I’ll be crossing out all the names as they are signed and adding dollars, terms and my analysis on each of Brian Burke’s acquisitions when the information is available. Enjoy!
James Mirtle’s top 100 UFAs:
Yes, there are some notable exceptions, like our consensus first choice on 4th line centre Ryan Johnson. Don’t worry, I’ll make sure he’s penciled in if signed.

New to the Blue:
June 30th, 2010
Toronto Maples traded Viktor Stalberg, Chris DiDomenico and Phillip Paradis to the Chicago Blackhawks for Kris Versteeg and Billy Sweatt.
July 1st, 2010
-Colby Armstrong signs a 3 year/$9mil deal.
Did anyone really feel this signing wasn’t going to get done? Pittsburgh was the only other team really contending with the Maple Leafs and now Armstrong is a Leaf for the next 3 years at a reasonable dollar amount. Good signing.
** Please feel free to post your comments/analysis on the signings, trades or rumours of the aforementioned in the comments section as I’m sure it will be a busy couple of days for all clubs.
– Joey Crabb signs 1 year, two way deal worth 525k, 200k in the AHL.
Crabb will likely be looked at as the 13th forward for the Leafs, or to play a larger role with the Marlies.
– Danny Richmond (D) signs 1 year, two way deal worth 550k, 200k in the AHL
– Mike Zigomanis (F) signs 1 year, two way deal worth 500k, 250k in the AHL
-More to come!
Good idea Shawn
Thanks keon. Thought I’d get it put up today so we can rack up some comments about rumours first. Also include potential candidates from buyout scenarios. I honestly think Cheechoo will be signed for close to league minimum for a year and given a shot to make the team. Works for me as long as he is waiver bound if he can’t crack the lineup.
He did get his most productive years in Ron Wilson’s system.
I posted this in the other thread and for some reason it didn’t show when I posted it here like 2 minutes ago.
What is all the fuss about Hamhuis? He is basically a more expensive Beauchemin
Beuachemin
328 games 26 goals (.079) 90 assists (.274) 116 points (.354) 205 PIM (.625)
Hamhuis0
483 games 32 goals (.066) 129 assists (.267) 161 points (.333) 375 PIM (.776)
In the playoffs their points per game is identical. I see no reason to bring in Hamhuis who is a more expensive, slightly less productive Beauchemin. Beauchemin is even 10 pounds heavier while being an inch shorter.
Damn you Shawn I was trying to go for the record for hits on a blog!!
😆
ok now I can read your blog.

Nice idea on the list Shawn.
and now this works?
I signed in. Let’s see if this goes through without delay.
ok, the problem is that ip range you are using coming from Irvine, CA 92612 is considered spam by the filters here at wordpress, I’m trying to use a filter to accept it and not consider it spam.
ok, let me try something, can you try and post in this blog again, thanks.
Leafs GM Burke has trade options – none involving Savard

should be an interesting off-season for our Blue & White…
all we can do is put faith into BB…
at least we will be better than Calgary.
more interested in the trades, then the free agency so…
What time do qualifying offers have to made by? Is it 4 pm ET today?

still no word on Mitchell, hoping for no word at all….

works…
FREE AGENT THOUGHT:
if we can get him on the cheap, wouldn’t making a play for Olli Jokinen seem like a bad idea?? put him on the Wing for line 2 or 3… I know I wouldn’t be against this.
Granted, some of you will say, “play the kids” .. but keep in mind, we don’t have our first, a divisional rival does… “playing the kids” won’t win games now, just helps Boston get closer to a better lottery pick, yet again… I’m all for grabbing Savard for peanuts, if he truly can be had for peanuts… and all for getting Olli on a short term contract, for as less as you can get him for.
Hamhuis only makes sence if Komisarek or Beauchemin go somewhere else…

Calgary sends Ian White qualifying offer of 997,500.
Sources say negotiations seem good and a muti year deal could be reached before salary arbitration”
Qualifying offers are due by 5 p.m. EST.
No thanks, pass on Jokinen, not the kind of player I want around the team.
I wouldn’t touch him with a 39 1/2 foot pole.
